Wind Speed experience by lead Balloon

About this race:
At Shine, we have many teenage members with spina bifida and hydrocephalus who often feel isolated and experience difficulties with their disabilities during these transition years. By the age of 11 many of our young people will have already endured multiple surgical operations, often involving brain surgery, as well as continence issues and mobility challenges. Many, even if they could walk a little as children, will be unable to do so as their bodies grow heavier with age. Hence, alongside all of the normal teenage issues, our young people may be acclimatising to a wheelchair for the first time or gradually coming to realise that they are ‘different’ from their friends.
We conducted a survey of our teenage members and the clear message that came across was that they’d like the opportunity to contact other teenagers going through the same experiences as them.
On the back of information gained from the survey Shine launched a group for our teenagers in March 2013, named This Is Me. To date we have over 1,300 members who all play an active part in communicating with each other, mainly via the Facebook page. When they have specific problems we also make sure that a professional who understands young people is there to help them.
On joining the club each member receives a membership pack, a regular newsletter and we organise various events specifically tailored for their needs.
Initial funding to launch the club was gained from the Roald Dahl Foundation. In order to maintain its longevity we are organising one of our balloon races to assist with the ongoing costs. Your support in the event will ensure that Shine is able to continue funding this, and other invaluable services, for our teenage members.

Giving Tuesday is all about supporting and celebrating Britain’s Charities. It was created as an International day of charitable giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season. Please join the fun by helping with our virtual balloon race in December. Should your balloon travel the furthest you get to choose from a choice of prizes for winning the race!
