About this race:
Hydrocephalus, a build-up of fluid on the brain, can develop at any time in anyone’s life. It can have a range of physical and cognitive effects, including issues with reasoning, short-term memory, language, visual problems and early puberty in children.
Shine has around 8,500 members with hydrocephalus. Our specialist resources include information and advice on exercise, shunt malfunctions and employment, as well as benefits and mental wellbeing. Shine also supports parents following a diagnosis of their child, on issues ranging from behaviours and vaccinations to education.
Shine further provides advice for professionals, including information for GPs and support for schools, to promote understanding of and education on the condition.
Shine is almost entirely funded by the generosity of the general public. Our balloon races make a significant contribution to our funds every year
