Supplementation with the vitamin folic acid is proven to reduce the chances of neural tube defects by up to 70% when taken in the 8 weeks before and for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Awareness of the need to take folic acid before pregnancy is very low and 45% of pregnancies in the UK are not planned or prepared for. In addition to this most women do not consume enough of the vitamin in their diet or have enough in their blood to protect against neural tube defects if they became pregnant. Shine’s Folic for Life programme focuses on raising awareness of the benefits of introducing and encouraging the habitual supplementation of folic acid into daily routines.  

Shine also works with GPs, antenatal clinics, midwives and other health professionals to educate and advise them of the need to give clear and informed guidance on folic acid supplementation at every opportunity, to help prevent conditions such as spina bifida.
